Hello! I’m Carson Chang, a graphic designer and front-end developer based in Los Angeles, California focused on identity and interaction. Technology and typography are the core of my practice; I seek to create optimal and elegant solutions within code and design that honor both function and form.

Peer-to-Peer Installation

Tools: Arduino Mega, WS2812B LEDs, Wireless Printer, Kinect, Projector, Processing, TSPS

Inspired by Robert Irwin’s Miracle Mile, this multimedia installation mimics a download bar of a BitTorrent client, where files exchanged in peer-to-peer networks are in fragments rather than in a standard linear progression. Passersby can engage in the process of downloading a torrent as a “peer” in order to generate a printed copy of The dotCommunist Manifesto (Eben Moglen, Columbia University). The installation senses and lights up with the movement of all participants. When all lights are maxed, the printing process automatically initiates.

The Pirate Bay

This project's original purpose was to evolve the identity of The Pirate Bay, the Internet's most resilient BitTorrent index and one of the largest piracy websites to exist. Founded in 2003, TPB has helped fuel the conversation regarding intellectual property through seemingly anti-capitalistic rhetoric.

As the project progressed, I came to actualize the fouls of the institution, its founders and its infrastructure; what originally was a project set to reinterpret the goals of The Pirate Bay within a new identity I now view as a visual design and front-end development exercise that contrasts my usual methodology of work.
